The surfaces of your molars and premolars have pits and grooves called fissures. If bacteria gets into these areas it can produce the acid that causes tooth decay. Tooth fissures can be difficult to get into with a toothbrush. Which is why at Keys, we use fissure sealants to seal them up.
The sealant forms a plastic coating over the fissures to prevent plaque and acids getting in. And hey presto, you’re smiling!
It does depend on how many seals you might need, but it’s a painless procedure that usually takes about 30 to 60 minutes.
The fissure sealant will be applied by a member of our professional Hygiene Team, so you’ll be in good hands from start to finish.
Some of the grooves in your molars and premolars are too narrow for the bristles of your toothbrush. By sealing these grooves we can stop plaque and bacteria from causing the damage that leads to tooth decay.
We would want to apply a sealant to children’s teeth starting at the age of six, and then again at thirteen when the adult teeth have emerged. That said, sealants can be applied whenever needed and can make a big difference to your dental health, even as an adult.
First your teeth are thoroughly cleaned and dried. Following this, the liquid sealant is applied into the fissures. After that, we use an ultraviolet light to help the liquid set. The entire process is a quick and painless. Probably not long enough for a complete episode of one of your favourite shows on Netflix!
