Prevention is always easier… Having regular dental examinations can help to identify any underlining issues even if you aren’t experiencing symptoms. It’s not too dissimilar to having your vehicle regularly serviced, with a major service and then minor ones in between.

If you haven’t been to visit a Dentist for 12 months or more, then we recommend a Thorough Examination first, with 6 monthly Periodic Examinations and Hygienes.

What is a Thorough Examination?

A Thorough Examination is an extensive evaluation and recording of all extra oral, intra oral, soft and hard tissues, Digital Radiographs (x-rays) are also taken. Sometimes an OPG may be required, we will explain why this may be required and ask first before proceeding.

You will most likely also require a Hygiene after your Thorough Examination, sometimes more than one may be needed if you haven’t been to a Dentist for a long period of time or if there is substantial plaque build-up that can’t be removed thoroughly within the 60 minutes allowed at the separate Hygiene appointment.

What is a Periodic Examination?

A Periodic Examination is recommended 6 monthly with a Hygiene. Usually once you have had your 6 monthly Hygiene first, your Dentist will then come in and perform a 10 to 20 minute Periodic examination. Digital Radiographs may be required at this exam.

What is a Limited Examination?

A Limited Examination is the exam you have when you are in discomfort, pain or an emergency.

Even if you’re a new Patient, this exam is to only identify the issue and get you comfortable. Digital Radiographs may be taken at this exam to help identify the problem causing the discomfort or pain.

If you’re a new or existing Patient and haven’t been to the Dentist for 12 months or more, you will be asked to come back at a future date to have a Thorough Examination which may take up to 60 minutes. It is highly likely your Dentist will recommend a Hygiene prior to your Thorough Examination.

The reason why the Thorough Examination and Hygiene aren’t done or recommended when you’ve come to us initially, is due to the time allowed and if you’ve come to us in discomfort, pain or an emergency, the priority is to only get you comfortable. Depending on why you’ve come to see us, treatment may also be performed.
