Restorations (Fillings) are used to restore teeth to their normal shape, appearance and function by filling cavities caused by tooth decay.
By correctly cleaning your teeth and maintaining a healthy diet, the need for fillings can be eliminated. Regular dental examinations such as your 6 monthly Periodic Examinations and a Thorough Examination every 12 to 18 months can identify any issues and treatment required.
Why are Restorations more often required at the back?
Decay rates are higher in the molar (back) teeth due to a number of reasons, the main one being they are harder to reach and therefore clean thoroughly. This is why a Hygiene is recommended every 6 months, to clean those hard to reach places properly that regular brushing can’t and help stop decay, causing cavities.
What types of Restorations are there and what are they made from?
We generally use two types of materials for Restorations;
- Tooth-coloured (white restorations)
Tooth-coloured or white restorations are now a more affordable option and an alternative to dental amalgam. Often used in the front teeth for cosmetic reasons.
- Gold or Ceramic Crowns (See Crown & Bridge)
