Daily Rituals for Natural Oral Health: A Holistic Approach

06 July, 2023

Holistic dentistry is all about an individualised approach to your oral health that’s gentle, effective and takes into consideration your overall well-being.

While it’s always best to consult with a holistic dentist–such as our team here at Keys Dental–there are certainly a number of daily rituals and habits that you can get started with right now!

What does a lifetime holistic dental routine look like?

In the morning

Getting into the habit of daily oral care routines is the key to holistic dentistry success. Developing a consistent routine that’s sustainable and doable is critically important.

Prioritise the following:

  1. Brush your teeth for at least 2 minutes.
  2. Floss your teeth daily.
  3. Use oil pulling.
  4. Use a tongue scraper.

Rinse with a mouthwash made from herbal or natural ingredients.

In the afternoon

If your general daily routine allows for it, try taking a toothbrush and floss with you to work. Getting a quick brush in after lunch can be very effective in helping prevent the build-up of plaque.

In the evening

Your evening oral hygiene routine should look similar to your morning one.

  1. Brush your teeth.
  2. Floss.
  3. Use oil pulling.
  4. Scrape your mouth.
  5. Rinse with a mouthwash.

Remember to avoid eating or drinking (other than water) after you have brushed and cleaned your teeth.

What products are recommended in holistic dentistry?

Toothbrushes

We recommend using soft bristled toothbrushes. Mastering a biological tooth brushing technique is far more powerful, offers more freedom and is less expensive.

Toothpaste

Toothpaste can be a bit trickier than brushes. An essential oil based tooth paste that is free of toxins, a toothpaste that also has Hydroxyapatite for teeth remineralisation. Our dentists are here to to consult and guide you if you need it.

Dental Floss

Plain, non-toxic and non-coated dental floss is the recommended type for the biological dentistry approach. Find the one that works best for you and your teeth.

Mouthwash

It can be difficult finding an effective and natural mouthwash made from organic ingredients. Try looking for a toxin free, essential oil based mouthwash.

Additional Products

Tongue scrapers are by and large pretty standard. For example, Dr. Tung’s Tongue Cleaner is a good and popular option but even the tongue scraper included on the back of many toothbrushes can effectively do the trick.

If you’re struggling with flossing, try the Waterpik water flosser. This alternative to traditional flossing can be really effective and helpful.

What are best practices for holistic dental care?

Proper Brushing

Everyone thinks they know how to brush their teeth properly. But do you know the real best practices for truly holistic dental care?

  • Brush at a 45-degree angle.
  • Brush in a circular motion, not back and forth.
  • Don’t apply too much pressure.
  • Spend at least 2 minutes brushing (that’s 30 seconds on each side of the mouth, up and down).

Tongue Scraping for Success

If you’re not sure how to best scrape your tongue, we’ve got you covered.

Step 1: Stand in front of a mirror and stick out your tongue.

Step 2: Use both hands to hold the tongue scraper steady and centred.

Step 3: Make sure the rounded part of the scraper is in contact with the back part of your tongue.

Step 4: Gently slide the scraper from the back to the front with a light pressure that doesn’t irritate your tongue or cause any pain.

Step 5: Repeat as needed.

Step 6: Rinse the scraper thoroughly.

How Oil Pulling Works

Oil pulling is a lot easier, and less full of pulling, than it sounds. Organic Coconut oil or Black sesame oil is recommended for this method. You should start off introducing oil pulling to you routine for few minutes once a week. Slowly increase your way up to 15-20 minutes three times a week, first thing in the morning before brushing or eating. It is recommended to spit oil out in the bin.

That’s it! See, natural dentistry tips aren’t hard at all.

Alternative Mouthwash

With or without access to an actual mouthwash, warm water mixed with sea salt can be an effective way to reduce harmful bacteria in the mouth and reduce irritation, redness, swelling and pain.

You can add essential oils like clove or mint to it as well to help promote fresh breath.

The Right Supplements for Dental Health

Holistic dentistry is about holistic wellbeing as well. Sometimes, vitamin-based supplements can be just what your body needs. If you need to supplement minerals and vitamins in your diet, focus on Vitamins C, D3 and K2 for your dental health in particular.

Some Helpful Tips for Lifetime Holistic Health

Holistic dental care is underpinned by holistic wellbeing. Consider the following tips for living as healthily as you can:

  • Stay hydrated by drinking enough water.
  • Get enough sleep, consistently.
  • Avoid processed foods, sugar and practice mindful eating.
  • Reduce stress.
  • Avoid smoking, drinking alcohol and other hazardous activities.
  • Exercise and stay physically fit.
