You'll love the softer touch of Hygiene Therapy

You might have heard people refer to Hygiene Therapy as a “scale and clean” or “scrape and polish”. We recommend Hygiene Therapy every 6 months but from time to time we do suggest more frequent visits if we feel it is needed to ensure optimal dental health. Looking after your dental hygiene is the foundation you need for a lifelong smile, and it can even be something you look forward to. So let’s keep it clean!

During your appointment, your dental hygiene team will start by removing the plaque and calculus deposits that build up over time. Once plaque turns into calculus, it can’t be removed with a toothbrush.

Next, your team will polish your teeth using a gritty toothpaste. Once this is complete, they will floss and then apply a topical fluoride.

Your hygiene team will also discuss and provide pointers for your at home care, so feel free to chat with them about your home dental routines.

How long will it take?

Depending on your routine for the visit, each appointment will take a different amount of time.

Hygiene therapy nly:
50 minutes

Hygiene therapy with regular 6 monthly exam:
60 minutes

Periodontal therapy
60 minutes

New patient hygiene therapy
60 minutes following the 50 minutes new patient exam.

If deeper scaling is needed or if there has been a lot of build-up, we may recommend more than one appointment.

Some people will ask for a scale and clean dentist, but all hygiene therapy appointments are scheduled with our Hygiene Team, including Oral Health Therapists and Hygienists. Your Hygiene Team are specifically trained in this area and bring a lot of experience into the room, so it is very rare for one of our dentists to provide hygiene therapy. So sit back and relax, you’re in good hands.

The FAQs on Dental Cleaning

What does fluoride do and do I need to have it?Icons/Icon_ArrowDown_48x48_Grey

The Australian Dental Association recommends a topical fluoride treatment every 6 to 12 months. Doing so helps to strengthen teeth and prevent decay, keeping more smiles on dials.

You can also always say “no”. Even if it has been recommended that you have fluoride on a 6 monthly or 12 monthly basis, you are always within your right to choose not to.

How often should I visit the hygiene team?Icons/Icon_ArrowDown_48x48_Grey

The Hygiene Team will make a recommendation suitable to your dental health requirements. In general, we do recommend that all patients attend a hygiene therapy appointment every 6 months. And of course, this should always been supported by good daily at home dental habits like brushing twice a day and flossing once.
